Aly Barohn is a fiber artist currently residing in New York City. She received a BFA in Fine Art and Fashion Design from Columbia College Chicago in 2008. Her work consists primarily of textile manipulation and hand-dyed fibers. She employs both traditional craft and experimental technique, to evoke a meld of historical and contemporary aesthetics with a focus on color composition through hand-mixed palettes. Dimensional and textural, the work encourages viewers to experience through touch as well as sight.
The work she creates is influenced by traditional domestic crafts—sewing, quilting, embroidery—work historically and presently thought of as women’s work. She explores the philosophies of housewives and mothers, the interconnectedness of their lives and the environments they shape. The invisible work of ordinary women. Through her work she acknowledges them, connects to them, honoring them and their sacrifices.
